William Joy Ashenfelter, 85 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away quietly at his home Saturday evening Dec. 19, 2009.

Bill was born Sept. 27, 1924 in Toledo, Oh. He was raised Michigan and had became a resident of Sheffield Lake, Oh after his marriage to his wife Audrey. Amherst has been his home for the last forty years.

Bill was employed by Ohio Edison, retiring in 1987 after thirty four years of work as a truck driver and maintenance man. He was a member of the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII in the Pacific Theater in Luzon and Japan with the 128th infantry. He belonged to the Amherst VFW post 1662. He was also a member of the Ohio Edisons Mens Club. He enjoyed fishing, camping and gambling.

Survivors include his son William J. Ashenfelter, Jr of Pasadena, CA., daughter Cinda Lou Podlich and her husband Harry of Amherst; two granddaughters Shelly Ann Harrington and her husband Mike of West Port, CT. and Nicole Joy Strohsack and her husband Brian of Lorain; three great grandsons and three great granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty one years Audrey L. (nee Winters) on July 6, 1999; by brothers Harold, Frank and Thomas and sisters ElmaYocum, Ruth Koch and Josephine Atwood; and by parents Frank and Edith Ashenfelter (nee Liebolt).

Friends may call Tuesday from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1:00 p.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Attila Szemesi, pastor of the Amherst Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate. Military honors will be presented by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens, Avon, Ohio.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of Cleveland P.O. Box 74924 Cleveland, Ohio 44194-4924.
