Walter Richard Hoffman, 89 years of age of Amherst, passed away on Tuesday, August 4, 2020 after a long fulfilling life.
Walter was born on November 17, 1930 and was the son of Walter and Irene (Endy) Hoffman. He grew up in Hazleton, PA.
Upon high school graduation, Walter joined the United States Air Force in 1947. He was stationed in Japan during the Korean War. After leaving the air force, he served as an Air Traffic Controller, initially in Pittsburgh, PA and then in Oberlin, Ohio.
In 1953, he was married to Anna Fedor and they had 1 daughter, Barbara.
After retirement, Walter got his real estate license. He also worked at Penny’s part-time. Walter enjoyed volunteering at both Elyria Memorial Hospital and Cape Canaveral Hospital in Florida.
Walter, affectionately known as Buzzy to those closest, was an active member of the American Legion.He enjoyed time with friends, cooking and being a snowbird annually in Florida. He was an avid football fan, especially of the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Walter spent his last year at Amherst Manor Skilled Nursing Facility. The family is grateful for the care given to him there and to the Sprenger Hospice since June.
He was predeceased by his parents, two brothers William (Helen) and Franklin, and son-in-law Stan Jozwiak.
Walter is survived by his daughter Barbara Jozwiak of Amherst; granddaughter Jen (Fred) Merkich of Columbus and two great-grandchildren Nick and Audrey Merkich.
Services will be held privately by the family. The Rev. Fr. Frank Kosem, will officiate. Burial will take place at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Foundation; 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
