Shirley Ann Kerekes (nee: Amenhauser), 87 years of age, passed away Thursday, August 3, 2023, at Concord Reserve in Westlake, following a lengthy illness with Lymphedema.
She was born July 27, 1936 in South Amherst, graduating from South Amherst High School in 1955. Shirley lived the majority of her adult life in Elyria, Ohio, where she was an active member of St. Jude Church. As President of the St. Jude Alter Rosary Society, she was instrumental with organizing craft bazaars, the ladies bowling league, fish fry’s and other social events. Shirley was involved with the Girl Scouts and Brownie troops while raising her children. She loved to sew, garden, craft and was a wonderful cook who catered private events. She was employed as a manager of Mr. Hero in Lorain, Kroger’s in Elyria and as a cashier with BP. In her later years she enjoyed puzzles, cards, bingo and watching the daily mass and rosary on EWTN.
Survivors include her loving daughters, Linda Kerekes of Strongsville, Brenda Kerekes Mooney of Decatur, Texas and Diedra Kerekes of Ottawa, Canada; granddaughter Hannah Mooney; and her sister Carol McBennett of Lorain.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harvey and Ann Amenhauser (nee: Vargo) and her sister, Sharon O’Neil of South Amherst.
Public visitation for family and friends will be held Tuesday, August 8, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. until the time of a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 a.m. at Nativity Blessed Virgin Mary Catholic Church, 333 South Lake Street, South Amherst. The Rev. Timothy O’Connor pastor, will officiate. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst.
