PHYLLIS JANE MITCHELL (ORR)
Mrs. Mitchell passed away at her home in Glen Burnie, Maryland on March 14, 2024. She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 33 years and 1 day, Fred; her parents Robert and Ollie Orr, sisters Mary Ruth Calhoun, Burnetta Orr and Joyce Goodwin, brothers, J.B. Orr, Benny Orr, Thomas Orr and Bobby Orr and grandson, Charles Potts III.
She is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Potts (Charles) of Glen Burnie, MD and her son, Mark D. Mitchell (Jennifer) of Greenwood, IN, her grandchildren Erica Potts of Glen Burnie, MD and Ian Potts of Baltimore, MD and Megan Mitchell and Mallory Mitchell of Greenwood, IN. In addition, she leaves behind three great-grandchildren, Charles Potts IV, Ethan Potts and Chloe Potts of Dundalk, MD.
Mrs. Mitchell was a 1961 graduate of Charleston High School in Charleston, TN. Soon after graduation, she met her husband, Fred, and the two of them would walk beside each other until Fred’s death in 1994.
Mrs. Mitchell volunteered her time for the Girl Scout and Boy Scout organizations in the Amherst, OH area for many years as well as for many school organizations. She was a member and officer of the Harris School Mothers Club, PTA, founder of the Central School PTO and a member of the Amherst Steele Band Boosters. She was a regular contributor to the Amherst News Times of Amherst, OH as well.
Before her retirement, Mrs. Mitchell was employed by K-Mart Corp. as an assistant store manager and soft lines manager in Pasadena, MD and store manager for Dollar General in Gwynn Oaks, MD.
Friends may call Monday, March 25, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. until the funeral service at 1:00 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com. Burial will be next to her loving husband, Fred, at Ridge Hill Cemetery, Amherst Township, OH.
