Okey Bennett

Okey Bennett, 76 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Monday, July 12, 2021, at his home.

He was born June 26, 1945, in Beckley, WV, and lived in Beckley till moving to Amherst in 1964. For the past 49 years he and his wife have made their home in Amherst. 

Okey was employed at the Ford Motor Company in Lorain for 31 years, retiring as a relief man. He was a faithful member at Christian Unity Church of Grafton and was active in the VBS and youth group ministry. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing, spending time in his garden and planting flowers at home. Most of all he loved his family, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Survivors include his loving wife of 57 years Gloria “Dawn” Bennett (nee: Mione): his children Pamela (Thomas) Block of Amherst; his son Duane (Kathrynn) Bennett of Amherst; his grandchildren Breanta Dawn (David) Gareau, Brittney Elizabeth Bennett, and Austin Tyler Bennett; his great-grandchild Taylor Leighann Gareau,and his brother Wilson Bennett of Burlington, KY, and many nieces and nephews. 

He was preceded in death by his grandson Bradlee L. Block on February 20, 2021; his sister Gloreda Lehman and his parents Woodrow Wilson and Myrtle Nell Bennett (nee: Kincaid).

Public visitation for family and friends will be held on Thursday from 12 p.m - 5p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst. Funeral Services will be held following visitation at 5p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Neal Brock of Christian Unity Church, will officiate.  Rebroadcasting of services will be available at http://www.hempelfuneralhome.com/ .  Burial will take place Saturday at Humphrey Cemetery in Fayette County, West Virginia .

The family suggests that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Children Research Hospital or the local American Red Cross.
