Obituary

Melissa Kay Smith (nee: Harrison), 47  years of age, and a resident of South Amherst, passed away peacefully surrounded by friends and family on Monday, May 30, 2022, at her home, following a courageous battle with cancer.
 
Melissa was born on December 17, 1974 to Antoinette Ott and Kay Harrison. She graduated from Firelands High School with the class of 1993.  Melissa spent many years as a hairdresser at her Aunt Maryann Verlotti's salon with a special spot for color. She married Jim Smith on February 28th, 1998 and shared over 26 years together and welcomed their three beautiful children who were one of the most important parts of her life.
 
Melissa was a devoted mother and wife, she enjoyed tailgating for Jimmy Buffett concerts with all of her Parrothead friends and her husband and daughter, making beautiful hair transformations, crushing trivia nights and karaoke, and trips to Mexico with her friends and family. She had the gift of bringing strangers, friends and family together. She was an absolutely beautiful person and fought harder than anybody could imagine.
 
Survivors include her loving husband of twenty-four years, James Smith; her children Alaina Smith, Jacob Smith and Angelina Smith all of Amherst; her father Kay Harrison; her mother Antoinette “Toni” Ott  (Del) (nee: Verlotti); her siblings Sean Harrison (Ericca) of South Amherst, Tammy Linville (Bryan) of Charlotte, NC and Dawn Swineford of Palm City, FL and her puppy Phinn and her cat Salami. 
 
Melissa was preceded in death by her grandfather Patrick Verlotti and her grandmother Roberta “June” Verlotti, and her uncle Pat Verlotti. 
 
Friends may call Thursday, June 2, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held on Friday, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Holy Trinity Cemetery in Avon. 
 
Melissa’s family would like to extend an invitation to a Celebration of Melissa’s life at her and Jim’s home, 218 Charles St., South Amherst on Saturday June 4, 2022 beginning at  2:00 pm.
 
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the Animal Protective League, 8303 Murray Ridge Road, Elyria, OH 44035.
