Mary Margaret Sliman, 100, died peacefully on Monday, October 16, 2023 at Belvedere Assisted Living in Westlake.
She was born January 12, 1923 in Amherst to Ngmey (née Joseph) and Abraham Sliman.
Following graduation from Amherst High School in 1941, Mary went to work for Nordson in the
drafting group. She then joined the Nurse Cadet Corps, graduating from Capital City School of
Nursing in Washington, D.C. in 1946.
Mary worked as an RN at Crile Veterans Hospital in Parma for several years before entering
Medical Officer’s Training School at Fort Sam Houston. She graduated in June 1952 as a First
Lieutenant and was assigned to Letterman Army Hospital.
Mary served at army hospitals in Yokohama and Tokyo during the Korean War, Berlin in the
early sixties while the wall was being built and the 85th Evacuation Hospital in Qui Nhon during
the Vietnam War. She retired as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1982. She also worked for E&L Transit
and the Ford Plant in Lorain.
She is survived by her cousin Daas Tannous, many nieces, nephews and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Anne Stines, Amelia and Elizabeth
Sliman.
Mary was a member of St Joseph's Catholic Church in Amherst.
Friends may call Monday, October 23, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the Mass of Christian burial at 11:00 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Drive. Amherst. The Rev. Timothy O’Connor, pastor, will officiate. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, South Amherst, Ohio. A luncheon will follow the burial at the American Fraternal Order of the Eagles, Aerie #1442, 1161 Milan, Amherst, OH.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Jude’s Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard, 916 Shadylawn Drive, Amherst, Ohio 44001.
