Martin L. Fitch, 86 years of age, and a longtime resident of Amherst, passed away Monday, October 4, 2021 at his home after a short illness.
Marty was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church since 1953 when he married his beautiful bride, and love of his life, Joan. He was a devoted husband to her for sixty-seven years until she passed away in 2020. He was the father of six, grandfather of eighteen, great grandfather of six and great great grandfather of one.
Marty was handy at home, fixing most things himself. He was creative, inventing many of his own “Solutions” to everyday problems. He was exceptionally witty, throwing out one-liners to friends and family often as a tease or in sarcasm. Marty loved to make people laugh. When Marty was younger, he was a very talented ice skater and roller skater.
He was an active member of the Saturday night Alcoholics Anonymous for thirty-nine years. He served in the Ohio National Guard and the Army Reserves for many years. Marty retired from General Motors after thirty years.
Survivors include his children, Peggy (Robert) Browning of Greenville, SC, Mark Fitch of Crestwood, KY; Michael (Debby) Fitch of Lawrenceville, GA; Pamela Fitch of Amherst; Catherine Fitch of Marlboro NJ, Janice (Ronald) Mitchell of Oberlin; 18 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandson; his sister Ruth Winchell of Lorain; his brothers Raymond (Donald) Fitch of Lakewood, CA, Alan Fitch of Englewood, FL and Robert Fitch of Florida.
Marty was preceded in death by his wife Joan Fitch; his grandson Christopher Fitch; a granddaughter Tina Glemza; his brother, Charlie Fitch; his sister Evelyn Dittmer; and his parents Donald Bentley Fitch and Vivian Loris Bendik (nee: Rhone).
Public visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, October 8, 2021 from 6-8 p.m. at the Educational Building/Sacred Heart Church, 410 W. Lorain Street, Oberlin, OH. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 10:00 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at http://www.hempelfuneralhome.com/. The Rev. Fr. Robert Cole, will officiate. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst.
A luncheon will be held immediately following the burial at the Sacred Heart Education Building, 410 W. Lorain Street, Oberlin.
