Marjorie Henes Marshall, 100 years of age and longtime resident of Amherst and Elyria, passed away March 2nd following a lengthy illness.
Marjorie Eloise Henes was born on July 12, 1920, to Elmer and Hannah Henes in Huron, Ohio. She was the valedictorian of the Huron High School Class of 1937. During World War II she enlisted in the Navy and was one of the first groups of WAVES to serve our Nation. Marjorie rose to the rank of Storekeeper 2nd Class and met her future husband, Warren Marshall, while on active duty. After the war she and her husband settled in Amsterdam, NY where she worked in the Finance Department for the Amsterdam Printing Company. She was also active in the Order of the Eastern Star where she served as Worthy Matron.
Returning to Ohio in 1966, Marjorie worked at the NASA Lewis Research Center (now Glenn Research Center) in the Finance Department until retirement. She and her husband then became the Tour Directors for Senior Citizens of Amherst (SCOA), a position she held for over twenty years. She also was a long term Director of Christian Education for St. Peter’s United Church of Christ.
Marjorie moved to the Wesleyan Village in Elyria in 2015, and remained active in serving her many fellow residents. She was awarded the David H. Jones Humanitarian Award for Volunteerism in 2019. She was one of the longest living World War II Veterans and routinely led the Memorial Day Parade in Amherst. Prior to COVID-19 there was hardly a day that she did not visit the Health Floor or join her fellow Wesleyan residents for activities.
Surviving Marjorie are her daughter, Marilyn St. Marie (Thomas), her son, Captain David Marshall, USN (Retired) (Shelley); 5 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. Preceding Marjorie in death was her husband of forty seven years, Warren. Public visitation for family and friends will be held at Hempel
