Laurence van der Oord, 81 years of age, and a resident of Vermilion, passed away Wednesday, May 2, 2007 at St. John West Shore Hospital, in Westlake, following a brief illness.
He was born October 17, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan. He was raised in the Lorain and Brownhelm Township areas and graduated from Brownhelm High School with the class of 1943. Laurence received his Bachelor of Science in education at Bowling Green. Vermilion has been his home for the last year.
Lawrence served in the United States Army Air Crop during World War II. He was employed with the Lorain School System for thirty-four years as an physical education teacher, retiring in 1981. He was a member of Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ in Vermilion. He was also a member of the Vermilion Amvets Post 22. Laurence was active with high school football and basketball, officiating at games for over thirty years. His hobbies included bowling, sports, crossword puzzles, reading, and cards.
Survivors include his wife Jean Ann van der Oord (nee Northeim); his son Larry van der Oord of Avon Lake; his daughters Linda van der Oord of Vermilion, Ann van der Oord of Ft. Myers, Florida and Judy Marks of Pataskala, Ohio; seven grandchildren; two great grandchildren; his sisters Elene Mayer and Alida Leimbach, both of Vermilion, Margaret Bates of Amherst, and Dorothy Spence of Tecumseh, Michigan.
He was preceded in death by his parents Peter and Margaret van der Oord (nee: Monaghan).
Friends may call Friday, May 4, 2007 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Saturday, May 5, 2007 at 1: 30 p.m. from the funeral home. The Rev. Elizabeth Terrell, pastor of Brownhelm Congregational United Church of Christ, will officiate. Burial will be in Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion with Military Honors provided by the Vermilion Veterans Council.
