John “Jack” Allen Thompson, 83 years of age, and a lifetime resident of the Amherst area, passed away Saturday, January 28, 2023, at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain.
He was born September 3, 1939, in South Amherst where he was raised and graduated from South Amherst High School.
Jack proudly served his country in the United States Army. He was employed at U.S. Steel in Lorain for over forty years before retiring in 2003 as an inspector. Jack and his wife owned and operated the Olde Towne Charleston Social Club in Lorain for over twenty years before passing the torch to their family. His hobbies included building model trains, cars and planes. He enjoyed gardening and was an avid Cleveland Sports and NASCAR fan
Survivors include his children, Jon (Chris) Thompson of Vermilion, Mark Thompson of South Amherst, Becky (Mark) McGinnis of Lake Worth, FL and Julie (Ed) Gargasz of Amherst; ten grandchildren; one great grandchild; and his sister, Gay Zurcher of Dayton.
He was preceded in death by his wife of fifty years, Christine Jean Thompson (nee: Czarny), on March 11, 2017; and his parents, Allen and Hazel Thompson (nee: Bartlome).
Friends may call Thursday, February 2, 2023, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of funeral at 12:00 at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Amherst.
