John Spain, 97 years of age, and a resident of Vermilion, passed away December 24, 2021, at Keystone Pointe following a brief illness.
John was born March 14, 1924, in Glouster, Ohio where he was raised until moving to Northern Ohio in 1946. He has lived in Vermilion since the early 1980s.
He was self-employed as a home builder since 1976. John loved to work and continued to work as a carpenter well into his 80s. Finish woodwork was a specialty of his, and he could often be found helping family with his carpentry skills. In his spare time he enjoyed gardening, and the occasional poker game with family and friends. He was a faithful member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst, and He proudly served his country in the United States Navy in the Armed Guard as a gunner.
Survivors include his children, Randy Spain of North Carolina, John Spain, Jr. of Amherst, Gina (Terry) Pool of Amherst, Caroline (Marc) Tallman of Wakeman; grandchildren, David Spain, Jeremy Spain, Tiffany Gutierrez, Joshua Spain, Jennifer Kadow, Daniel Pool, Brittany Keating, and Anthony Zunt; fifteen great grandchildren; and his brother, Frederick Spain of New Jersey.
John was preceded in death by his wife of sixty six years, Helen Spain (nee: Farkas); by five siblings; and by parents, Joseph and Felippa Spain (nee: Passatore).
Friends may call Tuesday, Dec. 28th, 2021, from 4 p.m. until 7 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Amherst. The Rev. Fr. Timothy O’Conner will officiate. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com . Burial will follow at St. Mary Cemetery, Elyria, Ohio.
