John Romelfanger Obituary

John Peter Romelfanger, 86, passed away Wednesday, April 25, 2007, at Amherst Manor Retirement Community.
He was born in McKeesport, PA on January 3, 1921, he was raised in Lorain and graduated from Lorain High School in the class of 1940-B. He had been a South Amherst resident since 1959.
John retired from U.S. Steel Corporation in 1983 after 43 years as a crane-man in the rolling mills. He was a Navy veteran serving 3 years in the South Pacific during World War II and received 5 campaign ribbons with bronze stars representing 8 invasions. He was a member of St. Johns United Church of Christ in South Amherst and served as an elder and deacon. He was a member of the American Legion Post #147 of South Amherst and a volunteer at Amherst Hospital. He belonged to Senior Citizens of Amherst. He was active in the Boy Scouts for many years and enjoyed traveling.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Shirley (nee Smith) Romelfanger; four sons Leslie and wife Cate of Columbia, SC; Brian and wife Cheryl of Johannesburg, South Africa; Mark and wife Linda of New London, OH; and Master Sergeant Eric Romelfanger of Las Vegas, NV and daughter Paula Knodel of Middleburg Heights, OH; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
Friends may call Sunday, April 29, 2007 from 2 - 4 p.m. and 7 - 9 p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst, OH. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 30, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. with military honors given by the Amherst Veterans Military Honor Guard at St. Johns United Church of Christ; 416 Leonard Street, South Amherst, OH. The Rev. Paul Eaton, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
