Jack Snyder, 73, a resident of Amherst Township, passed away May 2, 2021 at University Hospitals in Cleveland following a sudden illness.
He was born on September 13, 1947 in Lorain, Ohio. He was raised in Elyria and Lorain. Jack graduated in 1965 from Elyria High School and then earned an Associate of Arts degree from LCCC, a Bachelor of Science in Education from Ashland College, and a Master’s in Guidance Counseling from the University of Akron.
He began his career as a 6th grade teacher at Vincent School in the Clearview School System. Jack taught typing and later became a high school guidance counselor at Brookside High School in the Sheffield-Sheffield Lake School System. He took great pride in working as a volunteer counselor with the Lorain County Crisis Team helping children at schools during any crisis. Jack was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ in Lorain and served for many years on the church council as a trustee. He loved traveling with his family throughout the United States. He enjoyed visiting Major League Baseball stadiums, national parks, and taking numerous trips to Disney World. Also, he frequented many Civil War battlefields and particularly loved touring the battlefields at Gettysburg often. Jack loved animals and owned many cats and several Shetland sheepdogs over the years. He really enjoyed antiques, going to auctions and old cars - his favorite was the Model A. He was a member of the “A” Team Model A. Club. He loved baseball, and he and his family were Cleveland Indians season ticket holders for many years. Jack was a well-loved man who enjoyed being with his family, especially his grandchildren. He loved taking them to movies, Put-in-Bay, and especially Cedar Point. Jack rarely missed a daily trip to McDonald’s to enjoy a Diet Coke and meet with friends. He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed making people laugh.
Survivors include his wife of forty-eight years, Leslie Snyder (nee: Popa); his children, Jarred (Courtney) Snyder of Parma and Joanna (Mike) Petrillo of Amherst and his grandchildren Michael and Claire Petrillo, and Natalie and August Snyder.
He was preceded in death by his parents John J. and Ruth Snyder (nee: Schmidt).
Public visitation for family and friends will be held on Monday, May 10, 2021 from 2-4 & 6-9 p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst. Due to Covid-19, we are asking that people wear a mask and be careful to maintain social distancing. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's United Church of Christ, 715 Reid Avenue, Lorain. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at http://www.hempelfuneralhome.com/ . The Rev. David Rogers, pastor will officiate. Private burial will take place at Ridge Hill Memorial Park at a later date.
