Harvey Leonard Gochnour, 77 years of age, and a lifetime resident of Amherst, passed away Saturday, September 23, 2023, at his home, following a lengthy illness.
He was born August 8, 1946, in Lorain, Ohio. Harvey was raised in Amherst, graduating from South Amherst High School with the class of 1965.
He proudly served in the United States Air Force as a B52 Crew Chief. After the military, Harvey was employed in the U.S. Steel in Lorain for forty-two years as a business planner. He was a member of the Stonington Masonic Lodge in Amherst. He was a member of the Sanctuary at the Congregation Church in South Amherst. Harvey was very artistic and was a creator of art with his stained glass pieces. He was a very meticulous person who took pride in all he did, and loved being busy. His hobbies included traveling, gardening and golfing.
Survivors include his wife of twenty-seven years, Barbara Jo Gochnour (nee: Hatfield); his children, Jared Gochnour (Tammy) of Pelham, AL, Lisa Marie Gochnour (Jeff Cartier) of Greenville, RI, Abigail Lynn Simmons of Lorain and Lillian Gochnour of Amherst; and his grandson Cody Gochnour.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Elizabeth Gochnour; and his parents, Harvey and Rita Gochnour (nee: Tomasek).
Friends may call Tuesday, September 26, 2023, from 4-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Arthur Weigand, pastor of The Sanctuary of the Congregational Church, will officiate. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.
