Geraldine (Gerri) Smith Obituary

Geraldine (Gerri) M. Smith, age 82, of Amherst and Lorain, Ohio, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024 at Mercy Health-Lorain Hospital after a brief encounter with Cancer.
She was born November 8, 1941 in Lorain and grew up in South Lorain and attended Saint Ladislaus Roman Catholic Church School. Later, her family moved to Amherst, Ohio where she attended Amherst Steele High School graduating with the Class of 1959. Later, Gerri attended Lorain County Community College where she earned an Associate Degree.

Her professional working career included The Lorain Telephone Co. where she was known as Operator 28 and later worked in the Assignment Center Department; Kolczun & Kolczun Ortho Associates; Fashion 220 Cosmetics; Invacare Corporation; and closing her professional career at The Nord Center as a Case Manager Tech. While at The Nord Center, Gerri was known for her hard work, dedication and passion for helping others.

Faith anchored Gerri’s life as she attended St. Mary Catholic Church of Lorain, First Lutheran Church of Lorain and Hungarian Reformed Church of Lorain.
Gerri could “light up a room” with her very presence and was she was beloved for her interest and desire to connect with everyone. Her smile was her “calling card”.

Her strong Hungarian upbringing and roots were evident in her passion for cooking many Hungarian favorite dishes and pastries. Her Hungarian Walnut Tortes were so delicious that she had requests to sell them and she had a passion for making and enjoying Chicken Soup.

Gerri had many diverse interests that included cooking especially Sunday dinners, baking, a miniature dollhouse hobby, walking the Lorain County Metro Parks, gardening, sporting fashionable hats, decorating, dressing in finery for special events, a love of flowers especially pansies, violets and nasturtiums, but shopping was her biggest excitement as she continually sought out a bargain. Traveling became a part of her life as she accompanied her husband on many trips to Hawaii and the Caribbean including biannual visits to Kelleys Island. Yet, amidst her diverse interests, Gerri’s greatest joy came from the moments she spent with her cherished family and friends. Her unwavering support and unconditional love will sustain her memory forever.

She was preceded in death by her parents Joseph Kocsis and Olga (nee Kun) Kocsis, brother-in-law, Ron Kinzer and a grandson, Angelo Catalano.

Gerri leaves behind her loving husband, Gregory S. Smith of 28 years, her children, Christopher (Tammy) Catalano, Michael Catalano and Carrie Catalano, her siblings, Pat Kinzer and Keith (Leeann) Kocsis, her grandchildren, Bella Catalano and Owen Catalano and nine nieces and nephews.

The family will welcome family and friends on Thursday, January 11th, 2024 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, January 12th, 2024 from 10:00 a.m. up until the time of the 11:00 a.m. Funeral Service officiated by the Pastor Jimmy Madsen at the Hempel Funeral Home, 373 Cleveland Avenue, Amherst, Ohio.
