George “Woody” Jay Woodcock, 77 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Friday, January 14, 2022, at Mercy Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.
Woody was born May 4, 1944, in Elyria, where he was raised and lived until he moved to Amherst in 2000. He retired from US Steel and Republic/Kobe Steel after 43 years of service as a rigger.
Woody loved being outdoors and could often be found fishing and hunting. He was a member of the Amherst Order of the Eagle Aries 1442. He was an avid Cleveland sports enthusiast. He treasured time spent with his wife, Becky and their family.
Survivors include his children, Adam Woodcock (Jennifer Anthony) of Amherst, Robert Kurtz (Carol Sipes) of Wellington and daughter in law Lisa Kurtz; nine grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; and his brother, Robert Woodcock.
He was preceded in death by his wife of thirty-three years, Rebecca “Becky” Lynn Woodcock (nee: Malin); his sons, Randal Kurtz and Richard Kurtz; his brother, Owen Woodcock; and his parents, Owen and Mildred Woodcock (nee: Pais).
Friends may call Wednesday, January 19, 2022, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11 a.m. at the funeral home.
