Eugene Cheslie Lockhart, 97 years of age, and a resident of Lorain, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Friday, June 10, 2022 at New Life Hospice Center in Lorain, following a full and meaningful life.
He was born August 9, 1924, in Tazewell, VA. where he was raised and lived until entering the United States Army. Gene served his country in the European Theater during WWII and was awarded EAME Medal with bronze arrow head for his participation in the amphibious assault on the beaches of Normandy during the D-Day invasion.
Being a hard worker was part of Gene’s character. He worked for thirty years for the US Steel Mill retiring from the bar mill as a MillWright. His free time was spent alongside his wife and best friend, Catherine, residing in and flipping thirty five houses in multiple communities throughout the county. He was a member of the Church of the Open Door in Elyria. When time permitted, Gene and Catherine love to travel.
Survivors include his children, Nick Lockhart of Pilot Mt., NC, Pamela (Jack) Hall of Thornton, KY, Deborah (Don) Mitchell of Lorain, Darrell Lockhart of Lorain, and Guynith (Rodney) Browning of Vermilion; sixteen grandchildren; many great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; his siblings, William (Doris) of Amherst, Bea (Ralph) Harrington of Amherst, and Fay (David) Bender of Amherst.
He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-four years, Sara Catherine Lockhart on January 6, 2022; and his parents, George and Mattie Lockhart (nee: Lambert); and his siblings, Ruby, Rose, and Don; as well as daughter in law Sharon Lockhart.
Friends may call Tuesday, June 14, 2022, from 10 am until the time of services at 11 a.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home.. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at www.hempelfuneralhome.com . The Rev. Scott Mitchell and Matt Mitchell will officiate and lead worship. Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township.
