Esteban “Steve” Mendiola, 77 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, passed away Tuesday, April 20, 2021, at University Hospital Rehab Center, following a long battle with diabetes and heart disease.
He was born October 7, 1943, in Harlingen, Texas. Steve was raised in Lorain before moving to Amherst where he had resided for the last twenty-one years.
He was a welder and millwright by trade through the Local #1871 & #1090. Steve’s employment history also included the American Shipyards & US Steel in Lorain. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Lorain. He was an avid Cleveland Browns and Indians fan. His hobbies included fishing, being an accomplished bowler at Shoreway Lanes and Rebmans Bowling Alley, frequently bowling 300 games, as well as playing pool and watching cowboy reruns. Steve’s greatest joy was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and was looking forward to meeting his first great granddaughter.
Survivors include his wife of fifty-one years, Linda Mendiola (nee: Fair); his daughter, Consuelo Ramirez of Lorain; his grandchildren, Alexis Jendrusik (Lance), Aidan Ramirez, Adriana Ramirez, and one great granddaughter on the way; his siblings, Jose Mendiola (Felisitas) of Amherst, Frank Mendiola of Texas and Senovia Rodriguez of Indiana; as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Lucas Burns; brother, Jose Senaido; and his parents, Esteban and Francisca Mendiola (nee: Garcia); his nephews, Fernando Mauricio, and Jose “Dobbers” Marrero; nieces, Francisca, Senovia and Sipriana Mendiola; brother in law Charlie Rodriquez.
Public visitation for family and friends will be held on Saturday, April 24, 2021, from 2-4 and 6-8 with funeral services to be held at 8 p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home, Amherst. Due to Covid-19, we are asking that people wear a mask and maintain social distances. Rebroadcasting of services will be available at http://www.hempelfuneralhome.com/ .
