Alfred Selent

Alfred Selent, 91 years of age and a resident of Lorain, passed away on May 8, 2021 after a long illness at the New Life Hospice Center in Lorain following a full and meaningful life.

Alfred immigrated to the United States in 1952 aboard the USS C. H. General Muir and moved to Lorain in 1953.  After arriving in the U.S., he worked at the American Shipbuilding Company before starting at Lorain Products in 1961, retiring from there as a supervisor in 1991.  While at Lorain Products, Alfred obtained an Electronic Technician certification.  He will be remembered for his interest in tinkering with anything electric, his garden and his love of long walks.  He was also an active member of Zion Lutheran Church in Lorain and the Lorain Liedertafel Club. 

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Ursula (nee Semler); his children Richard Selent of Brownsville, TX, David Selent (Ann Marie) of Amherst OH, Monica Selent of Dayton, OH, Robert Selent of Amherst, OH and daughter-in-law Amanda Selent of Wakeman, OH as well as grandchildren Ricky Selent, Rachael Selent, Jacob Selent, Jenna Selent, Rebekah Anne Selent, Olivia  Hannah Selent, Kailin (Jordan) Henry and great grandchildren Anna Kate and Lynlee Mae Henry.  He also leaves behind his sister “Hannchen” Johanna Blich of Germany as well as many nieces, nephews and extended family.

He was preceded in death by his parents Rudolph and Mathilda Selent as well as siblings Edmund, Lydia, Jakob and Oskar. 

Public visitation for family and friends will be held Friday, May 14, 2021 at the Hempel Funeral Home in Amherst, OH from 6pm until 8pm.  A public funeral service will be held on Saturday, May 15, 2021 at 10am at the Zion Lutheran Church, 5100 Ashland Avenue, Lorain, OH 44053.  Burial will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park in Amherst, OH. 

Current COVID 19 requirements are that all attendees must wear a mask and social distance.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that memorial contributions be made to Zion Lutheran Church, Lorain, OH.
