Ruthmary Schieferstein

Ruthmary Schieferstein (nee: Nabakowski), 91 years of age, and a resident of Amherst, Ohio, passed away July 27, 2013, at Amherst Manor Retirement Community Center following a lengthy illness.

Ruthmary was born February 8, 1922, in Amherst, Ohio. She was raised in Brownhelm and Birmingham Townships. Ruthmary has lived most of her life in Amherst.

Ruthmary cherished being a housewife and mother. She had an RN certification from Cleveland School of Nursing. She also attended Bowling Green College for a year. Ruthmary was a member of St. Peter United Church of Christ where she had served as a Sunday School teacher. She was a local voting volunteer. Ruthmary enjoyed geneology, keeping abreast of current events and news. She loved playing piano, organ and xylophone. She enjoyed needle work, including crocheting, cross-stitch and sewing. Ruthmary also took great pleasure in corresponding with nursing colleagues and friends.

Survivors include her husband of 71 years, Russel Albert Schieferstein: her sons Gerald Schieferstein of Amherst, and Brian and his wife Karel Schieferstein of Brownhelm Township; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; her brothers Larry Nabakowski of Carrollton, Ohio and William "Bill" Nabakowski of Normal, Illinois; her sisters Carol Swearingen and Karen Bates, both of Westlake, Ohio.

Ruthmary was preceded in death by brother John "Jack" Nabakowski and her parents John and Ora Nabakowski (nee: Wilson).

Friends may call Tuesday, July 30, 2013, from 4 - 7 p.m. at Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, July 31, 2013, at 1:30 p.m. at the Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Brownhelm Cemetery, Vermilion, Ohio.

The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to St. Peter United Church of Christ, 582 Church St., Amherst, OH 44001 or the charity of their choice.
