Mary Etta Ritz

Mary Etta Ritz (nee: Canter), 72 years of age, and a resident of Amherst Township, passed away Thursday, October 6, 2011 at Mercy Regional Medical Center in Lorain following a sudden illness.

She was born March 22, 1939 in Jackson, Ohio. Mary was raised in Lorain before moving to Pennsylvania in 1961 where she resided primary until 1976 at which time she returned to Lorain. In 1986 she moved to Amherst where she has made her home for the last twenty-five years.

Mary was employed as a nurses aid at Anchor Lodge Nursing Home in Lorain for twenty-nine years before retiring in 2001. Mary's consuming passion in life was her family and she cherished her roles of mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She loved attending her grandchildren's events. Mary was an gifted artist. She found great pleasure in being a Pittsburgh Steeler's fan and in her beloved dog "Squirt".

Mary leaves to cherish her memory her sons Ronald Ritz and his wife Joyce of Amherst Township, James Ritz and his wife Donna of Hopbottom, Pennsylvania, Robert Ritz and his wife Linda of Amherst, Richard Ritz of Avon, Michael Ritz of Lorain, Joseph Ritz and his wife Heidi of Amherst Township; her daughter and her husband Tina Marie and Robert Bullock of Avon; twenty-five grandchildren; fifteen great grandchildren; her brothers Donald Canter and his wife Judith and David Canter both of Lorain, and Phillip Powers of Amherst; her sister Wanda Welser of Lorain.

She was preceded in death by her husband of thirty-one years Julius "Joe" Robert Ritz on June 1, 1987; her daughter Beverly Ritz in 1976, her step brother Larry Powers in 1967; and her parents Oris and Stella Canter Powers (nee: Oliver).

Friends may call Monday, October 10, 2011 from 2 - 4 and 7 - 9 p.m. at the Hempel Funeral Home; 373 Cleveland Ave., Amherst. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at the funeral home. The Rev. Dennis White, pastor of Grace Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in Crownhill Cemetery, Amherst.
